The Mara Plains, Kenya
Here are two riding safaris across the Mara Plains, an eight day option and an eleven day option, which includes a couple of days at Deloraine. The safaris tour through some of the best and least known areas around the Masai Mara Game Reserve, combining spectacular scenery with the lifetime experience of riding through some of the world's largest herds of game.
The Masai Mara, on the edge of which the safaris travel, is one of the world's most famous wildlife reserves. From July to September, it provides one of nature's most dramatic sights, the annual migration of over a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle from the Serengeti in the south and across the Mara River into Masai Mara. Following their footsteps are Africa's predators; lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.
The standards of comfort on these safaris are excellent. On the moving days, the riders leave camp after breakfast with a saddlebag lunch and spend about six hours in the saddle. This is broken up by a leisurely lunch and other refreshment stops. Meanwhile the camp staff will have dismantled the camp, moved it on and set it up in readiness for the arrival of the riders in the afternoon. The activities on non-moving days are governed by the riders. Although most prefer to ride out in the morning and in the afternoon, 4x4 game-viewing vehicles are available. Alternatively one can rest and enjoy the ambience around camp. The safari is ideal for experienced riders who want to see an abundance of wildlife and who enjoy long distance riding.
